Year 1

Term 2

This term in Year 2 we will be covering:

Numeracy

Number- Counting forwards to 20 and backwards from 20, numbers 0-10, begin to explore addition practically, identify numbers 0-10 by words

Measure – Understand and use the language of weight. Use a pan balance to measure weight

Shape and Space- 2D shape (Circle, Square, Rectangle and Triangle), 3D shape.

Money – Using 1p coins to make amounts to 10p

Literacy

Letter names and sounds

Reading using banded reading books

Writing- participate in modelled and shared writing experiences

World Around Us

We will be exploring the topics ‘Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Up, Up and Away’

Play-based learning- some areas of play will include a Vets, Three Little Pigs House, Airport and Hotel.

Tips for parents

  • Please ensure all items are clearly labelled.
  • Your child will need black P.E shoes (Velcro) in a bag.
  • Provide opportunities for your child to write, read and use scissors at home. We use scissors regularly in the classroom.
  • Please reinforce correct pencil grip at all times (One finger, one thumb and cushion underneath).

Year 2

Term 2

This term in Year 2 we will be covering:

Numeracy

In numeracy we will continue to work on building up a quicker recall of addition within 10

We will use the words thicker and thinner and order objects by weight – lighter / heavier and about the same weight. We will explore o’clock, half past and days of the week

Literacy

In literacy we will be identifying rhyming patterns, writing riddles and working on self correcting more quickly

Through Jolly Phonics we will continue to revise the sound covered and work on short vowels

World Around Us

This term our topic will be ‘Animal Antics’. We will talk about baby animals and the foods we get from animals. We will look at the journey of wool and milk and the jobs horses had to do in the past

Tips for Parents

  • You should hear your child read every night.  It is important that they learn to recognise their key words by sight.
  • Please ensure that your child gets enough sleep each night.
  • Provide opportunities at home for your child to use round edged scissors safely.  Help them to hold and use scissors and pass them safely to another person.  We use scissors regularly in the classroom and some children do find this difficult.
  • Barnaby Bear will be sent home to spend a weekend at your house!  Your adventures can be recorded but don’t worry as more instructions will come home at the time.
  • Please ensure that all school uniform is clearly named.
  • Please send in named black tracksuit bottoms/leggings and black PE shoes.
  • Children may bring water in a named plastic bottle.
  • Using ICT will be incorporated throughout the areas of learning.
  • Please ensure you child has a hat and is wearing sun cream on hot days.

Year 3

Term 2

This term in Year 3 we will be covering:

Numeracy

This term we will be looking at place value within 50, o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past and recording digital time. We will also begin to work with money up to 20p (including giving change)

Literacy

This term we will be focusing on Narrative writing, where children will write imaginative stories and continue to develop our use of capital letters and full stops

World Around Us

This term our topic is ‘The Weather’

Number – Quick recall of 2x, 5x and 10x tables, subtraction with decomposition and addition with exchange

Shape – 3D shape (Properties and sorting of 3D shapes)

Money – Working with money

Literacy

Grammar – Focus on apostrophes and adjectives

Writing – Narrative Writing, editing and drafting

World Around Us

We will be exploring the topics ‘World War 2’

Tips for Parents

  • Please ensure your child does their spellings and tables each night.
  • Please remember that Wednesday night is spelling activity night.
  • If you are not beside your child when he/she is reading, you could be presuming that the correct words are being read. Please look over his/her shoulder to check.
  • Please ensure your child continues to go over their number bonds within 20 for quicker recall. This will help them with their addition and subtraction of hundreds, tens and ones.
  • When possible try to get your child involved in real life tasks, for example when buying something in the shop – working out the coins they will need or the change they will get.
  • If your child is using a computer at home it would be good to have a mouse attached to develop these skills thoroughly.

Year 5

Term 2

This term in Year 5 we will be covering:

Numeracy

Number – Calculate sums from word problems, quick recall of 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 9x and 10x tables, introduction to fractions / fractions of amounts / fractions of shapes

Shape & Space – Identify 2D and 3D shapes, discuss properties of 2D and 3D shapes, complete problem solving activities regarding 2D and 3D shapes

Measures – Introduction to angles (acute, obtuse, reflex and right angles)

Literacy

Reading – Independent reading, group reading and whole class reading.

Comprehension – Comprehension work completed based on ‘Where I Live’

Genre Writing – Focus on Narrative writing, planning setting, characters, introductions and conclusions

World Around Us 

We will be exploring the topic ‘Where I live’ in the second term.

Tips for Parents

  • Spend time with your child playing table games when the times table cards come home, this is an invaluable and fun way to learn new tables.
  • Please ensure that all school uniform is clearly named.
  • Using ICT will be incorporated throughout the areas of learning.
  • Make use of good educational websites such as Cool Maths Games and Hit the Button
  • Encourage your child when using a computer at home to use the mouse as many computer based activities based in school require this skill.
  • Make sure to replenish your child’s pencil case on a regular basis.
  • Remember your child finishes on a Wednesday at Holy Trinity and your child needs to be sure how they are getting home.
  • Please ensure your child is in school on time as arriving late into class can be very distressing.
  • Try to foster a love of reading.

Year 6

Term 2

This term in Year 6 we will be covering:

Numeracy

Number: Fractions (of numbers, equivalents, simplifying, mixed number and improper), decimals (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and place value) and percentages (of numbers, increase and decrease) and problem solving questions

Shape: Angles

Measure: Converting measures linked to decimals (kg, g, m and cm etc)

Handling Data: Probability

Literacy

Comprehension: Focus on inferred meaning

Grammar: Similes, apostrophes, speech marks and alliteration

Focus on Narrative writing, planning setting, characters, conflict and resolution

World Around Us

We will be exploring the topic ‘World in Motion’ in the second term.

Tips for Parents

  • Please ensure that all school uniform is clearly named.
  • Make use of good educational websites such as Cool Maths Games and Hit the Button to reinforce number facts and tables – some of these can be found under the ‘Useful Links’ section.
  • Encourage your child when using a computer at home to use the mouse as many computer based activities based in school require this skill.
  • Make sure to replenish your child’s pencil case on a regular basis.
  • Please ensure your child is in school on time as arriving late into class can be very distressing.
  • Try to foster a love of reading.
  • Revisit and revise spellings from previous weeks from time to time
